Training
Listen to what the barking means
The useful question is what happens just before your Chihuahua barks. Fear, noise, attention and discomfort need different responses.

Change the situation before training
Keep a brief diary: time, location, trigger and what followed. If passers-by provoke barking, move the resting spot or obscure the lower window. If hallway noise is difficult, create a quieter retreat. Reward spontaneous calm and teach an easy alternative, such as going to a mat, in a quiet setting first. Use short sessions and make the task easier when your dog struggles. Shouting can add stress and does not explain the behaviour you want.
When to get help
A new barking pattern, night-time restlessness or sudden sound sensitivity warrants a vet check. Pain, sensory changes and other health issues can affect behaviour. Fearful barking needs a plan that changes the dog’s feelings, not forced confrontation. Seek qualified behaviour support if reactions are worsening or daily life is becoming restricted. Bring a diary and safely recorded video to the appointment.
